An outdoor setting as magnificent as this overlooks an equally magnificent kitchen. This Scandinavian-inspired kitchen has been set on Lake Tashmoo, on the northern coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Elizabeth Swartz Interiors designed it to echo the easy, relaxing and gorgeous surroundings while adding storage and a open workspace. “The customer didn’t envision this specific home getting a gathering space for extended family or friends,” Swartz says. “They wanted it to be their own little escape.”

Swartz and her team made certain that this distance felt refreshing and clean and encouraged that the clients’ laid-back lifestyle. A small refrigerator next to the bar stools stores beverages; its location next to the deck which makes it convenient for stashing drinks before heading out. “There is no such thing as unusable space,” says Swartz. “We took full advantage of the dead corner.”

Limited wall space and many windows meant little room for upper chimney, therefore Swartz looked to other areas for storage. The team transformed a mudroom in the back of the kitchen into a cabinet with a refrigerator and full-height cabinetry, keeping the principal space open.
